"Joe Leaves It Late; Dan T. Takes Points Title"![]()
|
Joe Shindelus got off to a strong start in 2002 and survived a late-season scare to hang on and win the records championship. With a roster featuring running backs Ricky Williams and Ahman Green, not to mention Peerless Price in the middle of a career year at wide receiver, Joe put together an imposing initial two-thirds of the season. However, a late season charge by Dan Lieb and a drop in form by Joe in the last few games left them tied for the lead going into the last week of the season...and as luck would have it, playing each other! The deciding game went to Joe following an early Issac Bruce touchdown in the last Monday Night Football game of the year. It was close, but Joe won the title in deserving fashion. 2002 featured the introduction of a second (albeit lesser) championship for the owner with the most points. The battle for that title went back and forth between several owners before Dan Todd made a trade for Priest Holmes and bolted into the lead in the second half of the season. The addition of Fantasy Football's best player at the time and the free agency pickup of rookie Clinton Portis propelled Dan to the first ever points title and a $100 prize. 2002 will likely be remembered for Joe's and Dan's championship performances, but it should also be remembered as the year when the league came into its own. Gone were several disinterested owners from 2001, replaced by dedicated, knowledgeable players like Dan Todd, Jeremie Ginelli, and Dan Lieb. The league started to grow more sophisticated as the participants grew more experienced and seasoned. By the end of 2002, the league had been transformed from a means of killing time into a well refined, hard-core competition. |
